No Place Like Home- Even in the Movies!

February 24, 2017

Although born from the family classic, The Wizard of Oz, There’s No Place Like Home is a quote that rings true in almost every movie! As a home builder, we are particularly in touch with the style of homes seen in movies as it is hard not to compare every home to the Craftsman style we build here at Eastwood Homes! From new classics like The Holiday to well-known “oldies, but goodies” like Gone with the Wind, the movie world is full of beautiful homes. In honor of the upcoming 89th Academy Awards, we want to highlight some of our favorite homes from famous movies and share how you can personalize your Eastwood home to capture those designs. After all, the home doesn’t have to be made in Hollywood to be a star!

Charming Cottage in The Holiday

If you’ve seen The Holiday, you may have fallen in love with the charming cottage that Cameron Diaz’s character moves into for a holiday getaway. We know we did! Nestled in a quaint town in England, the rustic cottage is bursting with character and is the perfect home from a great escape. Who wouldn’t want to plan a getaway here and ignore technology, while bundling up with a warm cup of hot cocoa? Or perhaps a glass of red wine?

But who says you have to go on vacation to enjoy alone time? Why not build a new home with a getaway space in mind? We have designed most of our floorplans to accommodate an optional sunroom near the kitchen or a sitting area in the primary bedroom. These extra rooms serve as the perfect hideout from the rest of the world. Utilize the sunroom to take a break in your day or entertain guests in the evening. For a true retreat, the sunroom can be built to connect to an open outdoor living area with a relaxing fire pit and grill area! Or, escape to the sitting area in your primary bedroom and appreciate your quiet space. For inspiration, we have included photos of the sunroom in our Drexel plan and a sitting room in our  Davidson plan. Although not the snowy rustic flare of The Holiday cottage, sunrooms and sitting areas have a more functional and versatile vibe that we also love!

Georgian Plantation Home in Gone with the Wind

The fictional Southern plantation from Gone with the Wind is perhaps one of the most notable homes in movie history. With its stunning entrance, this home has all the curb appeal anyone could ever dream of!

Similar to this home, our Charleston is a spacious, open plan with a luxurious primary bath and a butler’s pantry leading to the gourmet kitchen with a huge center island. It’s the PERFECT party hosting home! The curb appeal can be enhanced with a side-entry 3rd car garage, elegant stone exterior, and a relaxing porch. The column detail and half-lite door are exquisite and bring a grandiose vibe to the home! Plus, the half-lite door allows in plenty of natural light! Who doesn’t love that? Especially on a high 70’s sunny day like we’re currently experiencing in the Southeast and comparing the grand plantation home to our exquisite Charleston, which style would you prefer to call home? Remember: Although both are large, our Charleston probably has little space to keep clean!

Classic Home from Home Alone

One of the highest-rated holiday movies, Home Alone, is a film you can’t forget! Just as difficult to forget is the McCallister’s home. With a classic red brick exterior, the home is spacious to accommodate the entire family and aided Kevin with a fearsome, yet hilarious, defense against the bandit duo.

To maximize curb appeal, most of our exteriors include a stylish combination of brick and stone, while our interiors are designed with open-concept living and features our homeowners care about. From designer kitchens, and wide plank flooring, to deluxe primary bathrooms, our interiors will make anyone fall in love and feel at home! We think the McCallister family may have felt right at home in one of our floor plans!

A Porch for Every Season in Practical Magic

The Victorian home in the 1998 movie Practical Magic features a wraparound porch that is perfect for every season. Wrap up with a blanket and a book during the colder months or sip on fresh lemonade and bask in the sun during the summer months; a porch is an ideal place for simple relaxation. At Eastwood Homes, we love our porches and our homeowners do too! One of the most popular plans is the Cypress with our double porch elevation. The 2nd level porch is often times connected to the primary bedroom, allowing homeowners a retreat to enjoy the beautiful weather.

South Carolina Style from The Notebook

Talk about a stunning home! This unforgettable, historic home plays a major role in The Notebook and in our hearts. From the white exterior, and wraparound porch, to the 2nd and 3rd-floor balconies- what’s not to love? We adore this opulent and romantic home, just as much as we love our Charleston-style Hassell! Our vibrant red Hassell includes a spacious double porch, a 2-car garage, large windows, and a crisp white trim. If you had to choose between white or red, which would you prefer? Would you go with a classic white home? Or do you favor a pop of color to stand out from the crowd?

From the movie screen to reality, a house can become a home with the right features designed just for you!  What movie homes do you love?  Is there a particular feature that you wish you could have?
