The Battery, located along the lower shores of Charleston Harbor was once a Civil-war era seawall designed for coastal artillery defense. Today, it is used primarily as a promenade along the shores of the rivers to soak in the sea air and view the historic antebellum homes which line Bay Street.
Patriots Point offers a glimpse at naval and maritime retired vessels from various times in our nation's history. The centerpiece is the USS Yorktown, a 27,000+ ton aircraft carrier which served in World War II and received eleven battle stars. Also on display are the USS Laffey, USS Clagamore, a submarine from the Cold War era, and numerous aircraft.
As a part of the National Park Service, Fort Sumter is a historical park of South Carolina and was an important battle field in the Civil War. Accessible only by ferry, Fort Sumter offers tours year round.
Comprised of 13 brightly colored homes, Rainbow Row along the Charleston waterfront remains one of the most photographed spots in the city! And while there are many theories as to why these homes were painted the bright pastel colors, there is no denying these residences are a colorful piece of Charleston history.
